Aaron Hernandez committed suicide in prison Wednesday morning, according to the Department of Correction.
In a statement, the department said that the former New England Patriot player was found hanging in his cell at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, MA at approximately 3:05 a.m.
“Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window," the statement said. "Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”
Hernandez was later transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. on Wednesday.
The suicide comes just five days after Hernandez was acquitted of murdering two men in Boston in 2012. He was, however, serving life without parole for the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.
