State and local police are responding to the University of Rhode Island for a possible gunman on the Kingston Campus.

According to the school's website, the campus is on lockdown while plice investigate.

The website stated:

"We are investigating reports of a person with a firearm in Chaffee Hall on the Kingston Campus. Secure yourself indoors (not Chaffee), stay there, and do not move about outside until further notice. The emergency alert system has been activated." the post read.

There was no confirmed report of a  gunman. 

Col. Steven O'Donnell tells Eyewitness News a call came in after 11:30 a.m. about a possible active shooter.

There were reports of a person with a firearm at Charfee Hall.

The school is urging all students to take shelter.
