Goop Egg

You're probably wondering what is going on in that picture. That is the 'Jade Egg' that Gwyneth Paltrow has been raving about on her website, Goop. The actress turned blogger included it in her list of best gifts.

Daily Mail Reports:

Writing on her lifestyle blog goop, the Hollywood actress claimed the $66 rocks boost orgasms, vaginal muscle tone, hormonal balance, and 'feminine energy'.

Well, an OBGYN saw the article and decided to explain why it was actually an awful idea.

Daily Mail Reports:

'The claim that they can balance hormones is, quite simply, biologically impossible,' Dr Gunter explains.

'Pelvic floor exercises can help with incontinence and even give stronger orgasms for women, but they cannot change hormones.

'As for female energy? I'm a gynecologist and I don't know what that is. How does one test for it? Organically sourced, fair trade urine pH sticks coming soon to GOOP for $77 I presume?'

Addressing the logistics of holding the egg in place all day, Dr Gunter explains women are not meant to continually contract their pelvic floor muscles.

In fact, she says, 'the relaxation phase is just as important' to keep these muscles in shape.

Overdoing it could lead to pain during sex.

'Overenthusiastic Kegel exercises or incorrectly done Kegel exercises are a cause of pelvic pain and pain with sex in my practice,' Dr Gunter writes.

Yeah, that doesn't sound very convincing when you look at it that way. Here are the reasons why the Jade Egg could be a health concern...

TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME

Dr Gunter warns the porousness of the egg could allow bacteria to enter and fester inside the vagina.

This raises a woman's risk of getting toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

TSS is a rare but life-threatening bacterial infection.

It is caused by staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogenes - bacteria that normally live harmlessly on the skin, nose or mouth.

But they can invade the body's bloodstream, where they release poisonous toxins, that damage tissue, including skin and organs, and can disturb many vital organ functions.

TSS is a medical emergency and sufferers must seek medical help as soon as possible.

If left untreated, TSS can cause shock and organ damage that results in death.

SYMPTOMS

  • Temperature of 38.9°C or above
  • Fainting; widespread
  • Flat, red skin rash
  • Three or more organs affected by infection
  • Infection caused by staphylococcus or streptococcus

WHO IS MOST AFFECTED?

Anyone can develop TSS but for reasons that are not fully understood, a significant number of cases are in women who are on their period and using a tampon - particularly those designed to be 'super absorbent'.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

The role of tampons in toxic shock syndrome remains unexplained.

One theory is that if a tampon is left in your vagina for some time, as is often the case with the more absorbent types of tampons, it can become a breeding ground for the bacteria.

Another theory is that the fibers of the tampon may scratch the vagina, allowing the bacteria or the toxins to enter the blood.

No evidence has been found to support either theory.

BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

Few have heard of bacterial vaginosis (BV) although it's a relatively common condition.

Women with BV are more likely to get sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and herpes – and to transmit or acquire HIV.

They are more likely to develop pelvic inflammatory disease, a painful condition that can result in infertility.

Pregnant women with BV are more likely to suffer miscarriages and deliver premature and low birth-weight babies.

Studies have shown women's self-esteem, sexual relationships and quality of life suffer significantly from this infection.

Women have reported BV symptoms make them feel embarrassed, 'dirty' and concerned others may be able to detect their odor.

SYMPTOMS

  • A watery, milky discharge
  • Fishy odor coming from the vagina

Many women with BV symptoms think they are experiencing thrush, and commonly report being treated for this.

But BV doesn't cause itching and there is often a noticeable fishy odor.

Improper treatment for this condition leads to persistent symptoms, frustration and distress.
