Doctor Threatens to Take 'Brain Dead' Son Off Life Support; Dad Pulls Gun to Buy Him Time

When doctors told 59-year-old George Pickering II that his 27-year-old son George III had been declared brain dead after suffering a massive stroke, he wasn’t about to accept their conclusion.

'They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors. I knew if I had three or four hours that night that I would know whether George was brain-dead,' Pickering II told KPRC.

Refusing to give in, Pickering III took a gun to the hospital and had a three-hour standoff with doctors to prevent them from taking his son off of life support. He, reportedly, got what he wanted – during the standoff, his son showed signs of life and is now recovering.

“There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons,” his son said.

“I'm here now because of it. It was love, it was love.”

Charges against Pickering III were later reduced.
