Greedy Company Tries to Buy Out Grandmother's House; She Gets Last Laugh

She wasn’t moving out, not even for a million dollars!

After living there for over 60 years, 86-year-old Seattle native Edith Macefield refused to let her house get demolished to make way for a shopping mall.

So, developers had no choice but to wall her house in and build around her. People soon dubbed her home the “Up House” after the movie of the same name.

Macefield never gave in and, coincidentally, made great friends with the project manager from the building company. After she passed, she left him as the executor for her estate, which he donated to charity to be used as affordable housing.
