UPDATED - Tuesday, March 14 @ 7:40 a.m.:
A massive winter storm will hit New England Tuesday, bringing blizzard conditions to much of the area. Many areas are already under a Blizzard warning, with expectations of reduced visibility from snow and wind gusts in excess of 35 miles per hour.
In fact, wind gusts could reach 50 miles per hour inland and 80 miles per hour on the coast. This could pose a threat for downed power lines and outages.
Snowfall will start light and intensify late morning into the afternoon, with snowfall rates in the range of 2 to 4 inches per hour. Blizzard conditions will occur in much of interior New England Tuesday afternoon into early evening. Travel is strongly discouraged.
Southeast Massachusetts will be a wildcard, due to the intrusion of warmer air. That will push the rain/snow line further north from late morning into the afternoon. Where that warm air falls could mean the difference between less than a foot of and two feet of snow, for certain areas.
Most of New England will see 18 to 24 inches. Southeast Massachusetts will see lesser amounts, particularly on the Cape and Islands. Boston is expected to receive between 8 and 14 inches of snow, before turning to rain in the evening.
Travel is strongly discouraged. Please take caution when shoveling what is expected to be very heavy snow. It will be very taxing on the body.
---
UPDATED - Monday, March 13 @ 4:20 p.m.:
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced that Boston Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, March 14. A parking ban will begin at 7 a.m.
Trash and recycling collections will start early, 5 a.m., specifically.
Blizzard Warnings have been expanded, but do not include the city of Boston.
---
UPDATED - Monday, March 13 @ 3:26 p.m.:
Tuesday’s storm is already being called ‘historic,’ ‘life-threatening’ and ‘dangerous’ before it even hits.
Snowfall is expected to begin between 4 and 8 a.m. Tuesday. It will start light, but will increase to as much as 2-5 inches per hour by late morning into late afternoon.
Much of the area could see as much as 6 hours of 3 inch per hour snowfall – that’s 18 inches of snow in that period! Warmer air entering southeast Massachusetts will cut down on snow accumulation.
Wind will also be a factor. Gusts could reach 70 miles per hour on Cape Cod and Cape Ann. The remainder of the coastline could see gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Inland can expect gusts as high as 50 miles per hour.
Road travel is a major concern. Heavy snow and wind will make travel extremely disorienting from midday through the afternoon. Power outages are also a strong possibility.
The storm will wrap up by Tuesday night.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is asking citizens to stay home Tuesday, if possible, and encouraging employers to allow their employees to work from home. Many school closings have already been announced, as well.
---
Monday, March 13 @ 8:16 a.m.:
Signs are mounting for a historic March blizzard.
Much of state to receive over a foot of snow.
A storm is expected to receive over a foot of snow on Tuesday. Snow will develop by daybreak and will become heavy by late morning.
Snowfall rates as high as one to four inches per hour are possible. Late morning will also bring gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The Cape and Islands could see a change to rain.
Snow will begin to taper in the evening.
