Gil Santos, Legendary New England Sports Broadcaster, Dies at 80

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Gil Santos, the voice of sports in New England for more than 30 years, passed away Thursday at the age of 80.   

He joined WBZ Radio in 1971 as the morning sports reporter and signed off in 2009. 

Fans also remember him as the voice of the New England Patriots. He called his last season in 2012.

He is a member of the WBZ Hall of Fame, the Patriots Hall of Fame and the New England Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. 

"The entire WBZ family is deeply saddened by the loss of this great friend and man," said WBZ-AM Program Director Bill Flaherty, who worked with Santos for 25 years. 

"My heart goes out to his wife Roberta and his entire family," Flaherty said.
