Senator Markey Calls For Immigration Reform To Keep Families Together

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Senator Markey didn’t smile once as he spoke at the JFK Federal building in Downtown Boston, flanked by religious leaders and advocates for immigrants.

He says he wants action on immigration and children and he wants it now.

“These families are feeling poverty, injustice, civil war, they are coming here because they are desperate for their children to be safe to be protected. What the Trump Administration is doing is  adding another terror on top of the terror they are fleeing" he said.

He went on to say keeping children with parents is a paragraph’s worth of legislation backed by 40 senators, and could be passed by Monday. It would be called the Keep Families Together Act

“Banning family separation is not complex legislation,”he said.

The act would end the practice of separating parents and children seeking asylum in the United States.

Markey says it's it's more important to fix this issue now than the entire immigration issue itself.

According to Markey, The Department of Homeland Security has separated at least 1,300 children from their parents at the border since October of 2017.
