SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ-AM) — There are all different types of themed bars in and around Boston, but Urban Axes' ax-throwing bar is the first of its kind in the area, opening Friday in Somerville. WBZ NewsRadio1030's Carl Stevens checked out the new facility.

The goal is to throw an ax at one of a dozen large targets on the wall.

“This is an indoor ax-throwing facility, intended for group events — anywhere from six people to 100 people can come and throw axes,” Urban Axes co-owner Krista Paton said. “We teach everyone how to throw, get them throwing safely and comfortably, and then start a tournament where we crown an ax-throwing champion by the time you leave.”

The bar, located in Union Square in Somerville, will be the very first ax-throwing bar in the Boston area. They open Friday at 5 p.m. for public walk-ins. The company is originally based in Philadelphia.
