AMESBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Massachusetts State Police trooper is recovering after being attacked while on a work detail Thursday morning.

State Police Col. Christopher Mason said the trooper, a 34-year-old military veteran assigned to the Andover barracks, was stabbed by Nathan Aguilar, 18 of Melrose, around noon on Route 495 in Amesbury. The trooper then shot Aguilar.

Authorities said Aguilar stopped in the breakdown lane and approached the trooper's cruiser wearing a black ski-like mask and carrying a knife.

"In response to that, the trooper struggled with the subject, was inflicted with several stab or cut wounds on the left arm, and the trooper was forced to discharge his service weapon," Mason said at a press conference later Thursday. "There was what can only be described as a chilling radio transmission across the State Police airwaves."

Aguilar was taken to a Boston hospital via MedFlight with gunshot wounds.

The trooper, who has not yet been identified, has been released from the hospital.

A large police presence in the area has been affecting traffic.
