If you like authentic scares rooted in real history, New England is a great place to be.
Thrillist recently named the creepiest place to visit in every state and chose the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River as the top haunted spot in Massachusetts. Here’s what their expert had to say about this local haunt, after experiencing a scary stay:
“In case you don't remember the world's most disturbing nursery rhyme, Lizzie Borden hacked up her parents with an axe back in 1892. And now, you can sleep at the delightful B&B/infamous crime scene where it all happened. On your visit, you'll sleep at the Bordens’ home, eat their last meal (Johnnycakes and eggs), and sleep in the bedroom where the body of Lizzie’s stepmother was found. After a stay there, I can attest: This home painstakingly furnished to look exactly as it did on the morning of the murders will creep you right out. Daytime tours accommodate lame-o wusses. Better, though, the 175-year-old property hosts up to 20 overnight guests, one of whom will invariably pull out the house ouija board after the evening guide departs and try to contact Lizzie. I did not sleep a wink.”
Three other New England business also made the list: the Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire, where the hazy ghost of a princess is said to appear in people’s photos, the now-renamed Curtis House Inn in Connecticut, said to house the spirits of pasts workers who clocked in, but never clocked out, and the White Horse Tavern in Rhode Island, where a specter of a patron who mysteriously died on premises is said to “chill” by the fireplace.
Looking for something outdoors, so you can keep your social distance? The list also features Mount Hope Cemetery in Maine, which you may recognize from the 1989 movie version of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary and Lake Bomoseen State Park in Vermont, where the spirits a few long-dead locals of a once-booming industrial town have yet to move on.
