Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell, Octavia Spencer To Film New Movie In Braintree

Christmas will be coming early this year on the South Shore. That’s because the new Apple TV+ film “Spirited,” a musical remake of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” is scheduled to begin filming at Braintree’s South Shore Plaza this summer.

A-list stars Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell and Octavia Spencer will lead the cast of the new movie, which is written and directed by Sean Anders and John Morris. Anders and Morris previously teamed up for the “Daddy’s Home” movies, which were also shot in the area.

Braintree Mayor Charles Kokoros told the Patriot Ledger that filming will begin in the Nordstrom wing of the plaza in early July.

This isn’t the first movie shot at the South Shore Plaza. Parts of the 2008 Kevin James comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" were filmed inside the mall, as well.

Reynolds is no stranger to the South Shore. He previously visited Union Point in Weymouth to film scenes for “Free Guy,” which is slated for release on August 13. Ferrell was previously in the South Shore filming scenes for “Daddy’s Home 2” at Quincy Medical Center and areas around Hingham’s Prospect Street.

“Spirited” is one of a handful of high-profile movies filmed in the Boston area in recent months. Scenes for the George Clooney film “The Tender Bar” were filmed in Braintree in April. “Don’t Look Up,” starring Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet also used Weymouth’s Union Point to film scenes this past winter. Also, “Schitt's Creek” star Annie Murphy was at the Common Market Restaurants in Quincy filming scenes for the AMC comedy series “Kevin Can F*** Himself” in February.
