BURLINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After dozens of Amazon packages were found stuffed in a dumpster, the Burlington Police Department became a makeshift delivery service.
A groundskeeper at Burlington's Chestnut Hill cemetery found the packages and notified the department. Police put a call in to Amazon, but the company didn't respond right away, so they decided to deliver the parcels themselves.
"To ensure that everyone gets their merchandise in a timely fashion (and without too much red tape!) we are delivering the packages to the proper addresses," the department said on Twitter. "If you see an officer delivering your packages say hello!"
Some Amazon customers were surprised to see their packages delivered by cops in cruisers Monday.
"It's just great, because Amazon's usually a great service," he said. "We ordered some things one-day delivery, and they didn't get here. That normally doesn't happen, but this is why."
Officers who helped make the deliveries said they were happy to do so.
"We care about the community, so it's a great way for us to give back to the community," Burlington Police Patrolman Rob Reyes said.
As for how the packages wound up in the dumpster in the first place, Amazon said the delivery partner involved has been fired.
"We appreciate the support of the Burlington Police Department in helping ensure packages get to customers," an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. "This situation does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery partners, and the individual involved is no longer delivering Amazon packages."
