FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Fairhaven woman, who appeared to be the fourth human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), died on Sunday.

A family member of Laurie Slyvia said she passed away after battling the virus, according to a Facebook post.

Slyvia came into contact with the virus earlier this month. She spent several days at Tufts Medical Center, where her condition deteriorated.

M.L. Baron, a close friend of Slyvia, said that she was likely bitten at an event on August 4 that celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary.

“Of all people this person got bit and it could have been anybody, including my wife, that was there,” Baron said.
