HUDSON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mulready Elementary School has been hit hard by the flu season, with both teachers and students calling out sick.
Wednesday the school had 123 absentee students—about 47 percent of the student body. Although not all students have the flu, at least 48 students tested positive for Flu Type B.
Principal Kelly Costa Sardella said that, since classrooms only have a handful of students, teachers are trying not to move too forward with material. They are using the time to review work, so students who have been sick have time to catch up.
"This is a first. I've been here five years and this is a first," Costa Sardella said. "We've been losing a lot of teachers too, we have teachers and we have parents and we also have ABA therapists in our school."
However, the numbers have already began to go down. By Thursday, the number of absentees went down to 110.
