BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A handful of Boston's most popular museums and zoos are offering free admission and special events on Monday January 20th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Here's how you can join them to celebrate his legacy.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
- Admission will be free starting 11 A.M. Monday on a first come first serve basis. That includes admission to the entire art museum and special exhibitions.
- Entry will be timed every 30 minutes with the last entry at 4 P.M.
- There will be special performances by local artists including storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, and Boston Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola.
- The museum will also be holding a social justice project entitled "Wee The People." It's an interactive family friendly workshop on the legacy of MLK.
- Visitors are encouraged to bring donations of new toiletries to create care packages for families served by the Elizabeth Stone House, a Roxbury-based organization that partners with adult and child survivors of domestic violence.
Institute Of Contemporary Art
- Admission will be free starting 10 A.M. Monday.
- There will be two new exhibitions opening up on MLK Day: "Tschabalala Self: Out of Body," and "Caroline Caycedo: Cosmotarrayas."
- There will also be an art-making area where visitors can create a personal banner to represent something they believe in.
- You can also catch a free screening of the film A Wall is A Wall: Short Film Program in the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater, on loop 11 A.M.- 4 P.M.
Museum Of Fine Arts
- Admission will be free starting 10 A.M. until 5 P.M. on Monday. It involves dozens of events, installations, interactive art pieces, performances, tours, talks, and walks.
- Events include commemorative remarks from Mayor Marty Walsh at noon in the Shapiro Family Courtyard.
- Music researcher and MFA community arts liaison DJ Dayglow will be spinning feel-good soul, funk and Motown all day long.
- Hear about youth empowerment from student athletes as they discuss what MLK Jr. means to them.
- Art made by students from the museum's ten Community Arts Initiative partners, created specifically for the MFA's MLK Day celebration, will also be on display.
- Spoken word and speech recitation will start at 11:30 A.M. and 2:30 P.M featuring BAM scholars who participated in the curatorial team for "Black Histories, Black Futures."
- Art-making activities start at 10 A.M.
- Story Hour and Dance Performances will run throughout the day.
Stone Zoo & Franklin Park Zoo
- Admission will be free starting 10 A.M. on Monday with the last admission at 3:30 P.M.
- Guests are invited to write messages of hope and peace on murals located throughout the Tropical Forest Pavillion at Franklin Zoo and the Animal Discovery Center at Stone Zoo.
- There will be several 'zoo keeper chats' happening at both locations. Between 10:30 A.M. and 3 P.M. at Franklin Zoo, you can learn about the red panda, birds, camels, gorillas, and farm animals. Between 10:30 A.M. and 2 P.M. at Stone Zoo, you can learn about the snow leopard, North American river otter, and the black bear.
