Lines Outside Allston, Brighton Restaurants Prompt Complaints

ALLSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Patrons in Allston and Brighton have been getting too close for comfort while waiting in line to get in to local restaurants.

The Boston Licensing Board said it has received several complaints about a lack of social distancing outside Brighton and Allston restaurants, and a lack of masks being worn.

During a recent Zoom meeting with the neighborhoods' liquor license owners, Board Chair Kathleen Joyce said it is the responsibility of the business owners to monitor guests who are waiting in line for their establishment.

"You just can't have lines, unless people can properly social distance and wear masks," said Joyce. "You'll have to tell people to not stand in line, or tell them you're closed."

Joyce said several other neighborhoods in Boston have had similar issues maintaining socially-distanced lines, but she said business owners have to find a way to comply with the health and safety rules amid the pandemic.

"I don't have a solution for you, we've heard this from other neighborhoods too," said Joyce. "It's difficult, especially when the neighborhood swells on the weekend or when college kids come back. All we can do is recommend you find some internal processes, hire more staff."
