QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Now that pot is legal to use recreationally in Massachusetts, people with marijuana convictions are able to clear them off their records.

The problem is, many of those people may not know how to do so.

That's why Ermont, a medical marijuana dispensary in Quincy, is holding an expungement event to help teach them.

A panel of lawyers will discuss the process, and allow people to clean their records from when the drug was still illegal in the Commonwealth.

Chris Yang, Ermont's Director of Retail, told WBZ NewsRadio's Kevin Coleman explained how the process works.

"Expungement basically means having non-violent cannabis convictions removed from your record," Yang said. "When you apply for jobs at times, these things in the past might have been something you had to write down. If we have it removed, or expunged, from your record, you would no longer have to disclose that to employers."

Yang said the personal experience of one of the dispensary's team leaders helped inspire the event.

"Devin once had aspirations to serve in the U.S. Air Force, but he was unfortunately disqualified from enrolling as a result of a prior nonviolent cannabis arrest," he said.

The National Expungement Day event will be held at the Sons of Italy on Quarry Street in Quincy on September 26, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

It's free, but attendees have to RSVP here.
