'World's Worst Cat' Up For Adoption At North Carolina Animal Shelter

(WBZ NewsRadio) — Turns out Perdita the cat isn't sick. She's just a "jerk."

At least that's how staff at Mitchell County Animal Rescue describe the tuxedo black and white "ball of fire." Perdita arrived at the facility after her owner passed away and neighbors realized they could no longer take care of her on their own. The cat was donated to the shelter where director Amber Lowery says Perdita has "earned the right to be a jerk."

"She enjoys her head scratches and growls at the end to let us know she's done," Lowery said. "We love this spirited, strong-willed, beauty."

Perdita's likes include staring into your soul, the Ted Nugent song "Cat Scratch Fever," lurking in dark corners, and playing sick for the shelter staff. The ornery feline's dislikes include the color pink, kittens and dogs, young children, the country band Dixie Chicks, Christmas, and hugs.

Because of Perdita's unique personality, the shelter has waived the usual adoption fee. At last count there were more than 50 offers for Perdita.

"She will be fine once she has a little time and settles into her forever home," commented one fan of Perdita's on Facebook. "And deep down, all cats are jerks."

Lowery reminds any potential owner that Perdita "is not for the faint of heart."

If you're interested in adopting Perdita, head to the Mitchell County Animal Rescue to fill out an application.
