Miley Cyrus took to social media early yesterday to give clarity to remarks she made concerning her relationship with hip hop, that had people up in arms. Billboard published an interview they had with her, in which she claims to have been turned off by what she characterized as the "Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my c**k" nature of the music she once co-opted as an expression of freedom from her teeny bopper image.
In the caption of an Instagram post yesterday Miley wrote: "I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I've collaborated with some of the very best! At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap!"
Her comments in Billboard were delivered in the context of her stating her appreciation for Kendrick Lamar's new music, which her critics saw past as they accused her of behaving in the typical manner of an artist who conveniently appropriates a cultural style, then abandons it when it is no longer beneficial.
"As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & Seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics!" she says.
