Bill Belichick has been known to make some surprising trades – from dealing away dynamic linebacker Jamie Collins to the recent trade of Jimmy Garoppolo. You have to draw the line somewhere, though.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, 49ers GM John Lynch proposed in the offseason to trade with the Patriots for Tom Brady, after coach Bill Belichick told him that Jimmy Garoppolo was “completely off limits.” As you would expect, the inquiry didn’t get too far.
Of course, the 49ers were able to eventually work out a deal for Garoppolo at the trade deadline. How long he’ll stay is another story. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has reported that the team will keep him on the bench while he learns the offense and ESPN’s Adam Schefter described him as a ‘placeholder’ while the team decides whether they want to commit to him or try for a quarterback in the draft next year.
