We talked about this on the air the other day. If you're not getting married, what do you call your significant other? I've been with Sam for seven years and I'm tired of calling him my "boyfriend." To me- that term seems to fall short of what we really are.
We're not on track to get married, but I'm looking for something that feels stronger than "boyfriend" and less clunky than "significant other." This conversation came to mind when I was visiting a new dentist office and needed to fill out the emergency contact info and I started to dread the feeling of having to explain our relationship that ultimately spirals into what our life plan is, ya know? Now that relationships are adjusting and changing with the future, it's time to get a new term that feels right and doesn't require a ton of explaining.
My solution so far has been calling him "My Sam," that seems to fill the void and sometimes i use "partner" but feel that word is still used my spouses and those who identify as LBGTQ.
