With a state as small as Massachusetts, it’s easy for locals to feel like they’ve seen everything worth seeing, but an attraction in Rockport, that you may not have heard of, is being recognized as one of the top hidden gems in the world.
Lifestyle and entertainment website 24/7 Tempo has named The Paper House among 45 Amazing Places You Never Knew Existed.
The house, built in 1922, took recycling to the next level, long before it ever became a part of the mainstream. Creator Elis F. Stenman, a mechanical engineer from Cambridge, built the home’s walls and furniture out of newspaper, according to the attraction’s website. There’s even a newspaper piano.
To compile their list, 24/7 Tempo reviewed travel magazines such as National Geographic Traveler and travel blogs. “We picked places that vary from man-made structures such as unique hotels to naturally formed lakes in national parks,” the site said. “We aimed for a list that represents all seven continents.”
Other attractions on the list include Crooked Forest in Poland, Treehotel in Sweden and Giant Crystal Cave / Cave of the Crystals in Mexico.
The Paper House is open daily from spring through fall. Last year, Atlas Obscura named the attraction among “the world’s hidden wonders.”
