A Year Later The Weeknd Is Still Bandaged At the Super Bowl; Here's Why.

We've been following The Weekends bloody character for almost a year. It started with the release of his album After Hours and his performance in March 2020 on SNL . From there, the character made appearances at The VMA's, The AMA's, and with his recent music video Save Your Tears Last night was the latest installment of the character during his Super Bowl Half Time Show (video above.)

In a recent interview with Variety The Weekend said,

The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated."

He goes on to say that being attractive isn't as important to him as having a compelling narrative and this narrative explanation came last year in an interview with Esquire Magazine where he said, " I don't ever want to promote drunk driving, but hats what the dark undertone is."

I like the the idea of transforming into a character to promote your message. Some of his phrasing leaves a lot up to the imagination, and I respect that. Some of my friends thought the Half Time show was "lackluster" but I thought his vocals were strong, and the production was awesome. Both the game and the show were a reelection of our times in Covid 19 .
