It’s not particularly difficult to spot road rage and other generally rude driving practices out on the streets of Massachusetts, but which city is home to the worst of the worst? A new study says it’s Lowell.

Insurance comparison shopping website Insurify found drivers in Lowell are 55% ruder than the state average, with roughly 42 of every 1,000 drivers cited for rude behavior.

Data scientists at Insurify analyzed auto insurance data to identify drivers that exemplified “rude driving,” which includes failure to yield violations, failure to stop violations, improper backing, passing where prohibited, tailgating, street racing and hit-and-runs. They then calculated the share of drivers with one or more rude driving violations on their driving record in 869 U.S. cities, in order to find the rudest of the bunch.

The survey found that the very rudest drivers in the country were in Rancho Cordova, California, where an average of 65 out of every 1,000 drivers had rude driving offenses.

Massachusetts is far from the rudest state in the nation, Insurify says. In an earlier study, they found the top 10 states with the rudest drivers were:

  1. Virginia - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 43.26 out of 1,000
  2. Delaware - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 41.25 out of 1,000
  3. Idaho - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 39.97 out of 1,000
  4. Georgia - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 39.53 out of 1,000
  5. Wyoming - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 38.35 out of 1,000
  6. Ohio - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 37.67 out of 1,000
  7. Wisconsin - Drivers cited for rude behavior: 35.29 out of 1,000
