BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Fighting loneliness one call at a time. That's the idea behind a pay phone outside Pavement Coffee House at Boston University.

Matter Neuroscience is behind the 'Call a Boomer' social experiment.

Students picked up the phone in the bright yellow phone booth and were automatically connected to another pay phone located at a senior living complex in Reno, Nevada.

"It was yellow and striking, so I was like 'what's this?' and I saw 'call a boomer' and was like 'oh I should pick this up'" one student told WBZ NewsRadio outside the phone booth, "It's amazing, I've never seen this before."

"I think it's like a very admirable attempt to get us to listen to each other," another student said before giving it a go.

On the plaque placed over the phone, Matter Neuroscience wrote that the goal of the project is to inspire generational connection through meaningful conversation, writing that "younger adults and older adults tend to experience the highest level of loneliness of any age."

Clark picked up the phone and left a voicemail.

"Hi, my name is Clark. I'm calling from Boston and it's a beautiful day outside. I hope you're having a wonderful day. I hope you see an interesting dog or eat something delish. Have a wonderful day. Farewell."
