One man’s joke on Facebook appears to have gone way over some heads. Now, he’s letting 50,000+ Floridians that he was just kidding around.

22-year-old Ryon Edwards created a Facebook group with the following invitation:

“YO SO THIS GOOFY LOOKING WINDY HEADASS NAMED IRMA SAID THEY PULLING UP ON US, LETS SHOW IRMA THAT WE SHOOT FIRST.”

Edwards told the Associated Press on Sunday that it “seems the joke may have gone over many people’s heads. I’ve got people in my inbox mad as hell because they think this is actually happening. I don’t know whether to laugh or sigh.”

Most of the Facebook responders do appear to understand the tongue-in-cheek nature of Edwards' post, adding photos and comments making fun of popular Florida stereotypes. Still, there were some who took the invite seriously, prompting the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to Tweet the following on Sunday:

“DO NOT shoot weapons @ (hashtag) Irma. You won’t make it turn around (and) it will have very dangerous side effects.”

Edwards said he now has some new insight, following this experience. “I’ve learned that about 50 percent of the world could not understand sarcasm to save their lives. Carry on,” he said.
