A kindergarten student from McAvinnue Elementary School in Lowell was left on his school bus for five hours on Monday, according to police.
A bus driver returned to the school around 1 p.m., after finding that the student was still onboard.
Police said that the driver did not check the bus after his morning drop-off, as is the proper protocol. So, the young student was never sent off to school.
The child’s mother was called and he was taken for medical evaluation.
“Central office and school staff are working with the bus company to ensure that appropriate action is taken relative to this incident,” Lowell Deputy Superintendent Jeannine Durkin said.
Lowell police and the Department of Children and Families are investigating.
