It was all about “girl power” Thursday, as hometown heroes David “Big Papi” Ortiz and Aly Raisman kicked off the Red Sox’s home opener at Fenway Park.
The Boston favorites took the field before a cheering crowd for the first “play ball!” declaration of the season, but, before they did, Ortiz tore off his Red Sox jersey to reveal a t-shirt with the words “Girl Power.”
The gesture was a tip of the hat to Raisman’s efforts as an advocate for female empowerment.
Ortiz then took the mic to tell the crowd “This is her city too,” a reference to the famous rally cry he delivered to a packed Fenway Park crowd, shortly after the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.
