As much as Bostonians would love to start 2021 with a bang, the skies over the city this New Year’s Eve will, unfortunately, be unusually quiet. That’s because, for the first time since 1975, Boston’s traditional fireworks displays have been canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
First Night Boston first announced changes to their annual celebration on their website back in November, canceling in-person activities in favor of live stream and broadcast events. Monday, the organization sent out a reminder that the traditional fireworks display would not be a part of this year’s scheduled entertainment.
“Unfortunately, there are no fireworks this year at Boston Common or over Boston Harbor,” First Night tweeted. “We hope to have them back with us in 2021!”
The usual in-person fanfare of music, arts and, of course, fireworks, is going to be replaced with over six hours of live streamed and broadcast theatrical, musical and artistic content. The live stream starts at 6 p.m. through midnight on New Year’s Eve at firstnightboston.org. Various segments will also air on NBC, NECN, Telemundo Boston and NBC Sports Boston.
