Official Mass Groundhog ‘Ms. G’ Doesn’t See Shadow; Predicts Early Spring

You may not know this, but Massachusetts has an official state groundhog of its own and she doesn’t mind doing her own thing. Tuesday morning, after Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania, predicting six more weeks of winter, Ms. G did not follow suit. Instead, the resident of the Mass Audubon Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln missed her shadow, forecasting an early start to spring.

The timing was certainly something Mass residents could get behind, as Ms. G’s prediction came on the tail end of another winter storm in New England.

“Ms. G does not see her shadow, so we’re going to have an early spring,” the farm said on Facebook Live. “On a snowy day like this, we can all enjoy the winter weather but still look forward to warmer days to come.”

Ms. G has been making forecasts since 2008.
