BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey says the Melnea Cass Community Center in Roxbury could be ready for use as a state overflow housing site as early as this week.

Opening the center to people in need is a response to migrants who have been sleeping at Logan Airport's Terminal E.

Massachusetts is dealing with a shelter crisis as its self-imposed cap on housing limits has been reached and there are thousands of more people on a state waiting list for emergency shelter.

Opening the recreation center as an overflow location has its critics including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

She says that she's concerned using the center for emergency housing could hurt the neighborhoods that rely on the center for community and recreational activities.

The Melnea Cass Community Center would be the fourth overflow site the state has designated for migrants and unhoused families.
