BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Aspiring young leaders from local high schools got a closer look inside the workings of the local government on Beacon Hill Friday during the annual Student Government Day (SGD).

Formerly known as Good Government Day, the program allows hundreds of juniors and seniors from public and private high schools to participate in mock hearings as elected or appointed officials at the Massachusetts State House.

The goal is to provide students with a realistic experience to observe and learn about the state and local government proceedings firsthand. Students participate in legislative processes, such as committee meetings, House and Senate formal sessions and Supreme Judicial Court hearings.

Running for 79 years, SGD is scheduled on the first Friday of April every year, first debuting in 1947.
