BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Officials are giving their reactions following the attacks that began in Iran early Saturday morning.

The U.S. and Israel have launched ‘Operation: Epic Fury’ on Iran, with Israel saying they are targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, President, and head of the armed forces. The attacks come after President Trump called for regime change in Tehran.

State officials made statements this morning following the attack. Senator Ed Markey called the strikes illegal and unconstitutional and wants no more war with Iran.

“[The attack] was not approved by Congress and holds dangers for all Americans. Trump’s illegal actions raise the threat of escalation into a wider regional war with grave risks for U.S. troops and civilians in the region. Trump has consistently exaggerated the imminence of Iran’s nuclear threat, even after insisting the United States ‘obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear program during his illegal Operation Midnight Hammer attack,” Markey said in a statement.

“Even Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted Iran is not enriching uranium. There was time for diplomacy before this attack, and there still is. Congress must immediately vote on Senators Kaine and Schiff’s bipartisan War Powers Resolution and do its constitutional duty.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren also released the following statement in response to the attacks.

“Donald Trump's single-handedly starting another war with Iran is dangerous and illegal. ‘America first’ doesn’t mean dragging the United States into another forever war built on lies while ignoring the needs of Americans here at home. The Constitution is clear: only Congress can declare war. The Senate must come back in session immediately to vote up or down on a War Powers Resolution.”

Representative Seth Moulton held a press conference on Saturday after the initial attack, raising concerns for the safety of citizens in the U.S.

“I don’t like the Iranian regime, I wish the Iranian people would rise up and change that regime,” said Moulton. “But to say that this is a good idea to risk American lives for uncertain aims, that’s a big question.”

Attacks in Iran are still ongoing, with reports from the United Nations saying they could last several days.
