CONCORD, New Hampshire (WBZ NewsRadio) — Like a zip code, and a phone number, people can get attached to their area code, especially when having the same one for a long time.
Much more than just a random group of numbers, they can provide a sense of identity and the reassuring comfort of continuity.
That’s the case for a lot of people with long-time connections to New Hampshire.
The state remains having the exclusive 603 area code.
That's not the case in many other states whose population growths in cities and towns, and new demands for phone lines, have made necessary the need to expand beyond an original area code, such as the Boston and surrounding area 617 code that has since morphed into several others including 978, 781, and 508.
The explosion of cell phones too has contributed to the need for more area codes.
But to keep that from happening in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu signed an executive order on Wednesday establishing the ‘Don’t Overload the Code’ initiative to preserve the 603 area code.
There are just 12 states including New Hampshire that have been able to stay with one area code, and Governor Sununu would like to keep it that way.
