BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new section of the Neponset River Greenway in Dorchester officially opened to the public Wednesday.

The new stretch runs along Interstate 93 for approximately three-quarters of a mile. It includes a boardwalk and a paved trail that connect Tenean Beach with Morrissey Boulevard.

"Before this boardwalk, the only way somebody could continue along the Neponset River Greenway was to cross at the bottom of the ramp at the southeast expressway — Not exactly a safe crossing [and] not something anybody wanted to do," Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said.

The project to extend the Neponset River Greenway has been in the works since the 1990s. The new part of the path quietly opened last summer, but a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday marked its official opening.

"The milestone that we recognize today stands as a testament to our collective commitment to expanding access to open space, improving safety, enhancing the ecological health of the commonwealth and celebrating the communities that we serve," Interim Transportation Secretary Phillip Eng said at the ceremony.
