BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Marathon runners are in the final stages of training for the April 20th race.

Many participants are beginning to taper in their training, which means cutting down on training while still keeping a few high-velocity workouts.

Runners along the Esplanade said the weather has been a big issue.

“It’s been a rough winter, it’s been long,” said one runner. “Cold all winter, by the time we hit the marathon, that’s when the south and other parts of the country are flying through, while we struggle.”

Whether it be layering up or keeping a few extra handwarmers, runners haven’t let the elements stop them from training, and they encouraged others to give it a try as well.

“Keep with it. I think it took me a while to really get the benefits out of running, mentally speaking,” said another runner. “You’ll see progress quickly, and run with a friend!”

About 30,000 participants are expected to run in the 2026 Boston Marathon. Boston Police have reminded people to stay vigilant among large crowds.
