BEVERLY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The YMCA of the North Shore is expanding its footprint in Beverly.
After two years of discussions and a retirement announcement, the Beverly Athletic Club is being acquired by the YMCA of the North Shore. Ed Soul, owner and founder of the 25-year-old athletic club, is hanging up the dumbbells and retiring.
Chief Operations Officer of the YMCA, Gerald Mackillop, said Soul wanted to ensure two requirements were met for the transition.
"That his staff would continue to have the opportunity to work and support the clients, the members of the Beverly Athletic Club community, and that whoever took over 7 Reservoir Road had a commitment and had an experience level to continue that vision," MacKillop said.

MacKillop says more than 150 current members of the BAC have already taken steps to become members of the Y, which will do its part to upgrade the space with new exercise equipment, among other major improvements.
"We're thrilled to bring in a whole new set of fitness equipment," MacKillop said. "We're going to replenish everything that they have. We're going to be putting in top-of-the-line cardio, the latest and greatest strength, and some of the cutting-edge health and wellness technology, like eGym."
